SIG32 Workshop

Workshop on Three-Dimensional Lagrangian Particle Tracking

26th November 2026

Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands,

Organisers: TU Delft Aerospace Engineering, LaVision GmbH

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is now considered a leading tool for fluid dynamics investigation. The recent development of Lagrangian Particle Tracking enables the quantitative visualization of three-dimensional flows in volumes of the order of the cubic meter. However, the technique is mainly confined to research laboratories and seldom used in industry, primarily because of the complexity of the experimental setup that involves tracer particles, illumination systems and multiple cameras. In addition to the lengthy setup and calibration of the camera system, the time from image acquisition to data visualization is often considered prohibitive, in contrast with the standard industrial requirements of real-time flow information during the measurements.

In this workshop on Three-Dimensional Lagrangian Particle Tracking, we will challenge the paradigm above, showing that unprecedented three-dimensional flow information can be retrieved within a few hours from when unpacking the system components from their boxes.

The workshop will involve presentations from TU Delft researchers and LaVision GmbH engineers on the following topic:

  • 3D PIV systems
  • Camera calibration and volume self-calibration
  • IterativeParticleReconstruction
  • Shake-The-Box Lagrangian Particle Tracking Algorithm
  • Object Registration
  • Data reduction and visualization
  • Ring of Fire approach for on-site aerodynamics investigations

Additionally, demonstrations in the TU Delft wind tunnel facilities will be performed to showcase the potential of advanced 3D LPT systems.
