The proposed Workshop is a continuation of the series of Workshops started in 1984 at the Institute of Fluid Mechanics of the University of Erlangen/Nürnberg and continued at the Martin-Luther University in Halle (Saale). This series of Workshops has really set milestones in the development of numerical methods for dispersed multiphase flows within Europe. An important objective was also the performance and discussion of numerical calculations for pre-defined, mostly blind, test cases.

It is planned to continue this series of workshops by focussing on recent strategies in modelling dispersed multiphase flows, hence, including particle-resolved direct numerical simulations (PR-DNS) as well as advanced experimental studies concentrating on processes occurring on the scale of the particles. Moreover, new developments in of the two main point-particle based strategies (i.e., the Euler/Euler and the Euler/Lagrange approach) for technical and industrial applications are content of the workshop.

The main objective of the Workshop is to bring together researchers working in the field of dispersed multiphase flow on a theoretical, numerical or experimental basis. Oral presentations and posters in the following areas are most welcome for the Workshop:

  1. Modelling of dispersed turbulent two-phase flows (turbulence models, heat and mass transfer, particle-wall interaction, particle-particle interaction, agglomeration, non-spherical particles, bubble and droplet interactions, coalescence, ….)
  2. Recent developments on Euler/Euler and Euler/Lagrange approaches (RANS-basis)
  3. Direct numerical simulations of fully resolved particles (solid particles, droplets and bubbles)
  4. Direct and large eddy simulations of particulate flows (point-mass approach)
  5. Application of numerical methods for two-phase flows in all fields of engineering
  6. Experimental studies on dispersed two-phase flows including new measurement techniques.

During the 4-day Workshop 40 presentations, each 30 min including discussion can be accommodated. Additionally, about 20 posters may be accepted. Also industrial participation will be appreciated.

Test Case Calculations

An additional objective of the Workshop will be related to the validation of numerical predictions obtained by different model approaches and numerical codes. These validations will be based on pre-defined test cases for which experimental or numerical results (e.g., direct or large eddy simulations) are available. The test case descriptions will be made available to interested research groups in February 2024. Most likely the following test cases will be considered:

  • Fibre-laden horizontal channel flow
  • Particle-laden flow with four-way coupling

During the Workshop, the test case results will be exhibited in the poster session. If time allows a round table discussion on the test case results will be arranged. After the Workshop the test case results will be also displayed at the homepage of the organisers. Joint publications of the test case calculations are also encouraged.
