Maximizing your ERCOFTAC membership: ECCOMAS benefits for CFD Researchers

ERCOFTAC is one of the largest member associations of ECCOMAS, the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences. ECCOMAS brings together 23 national and thematic associations active in numerical methods, computer simulation, and their applications in engineering and applied sciences. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) naturally lies at the intersection of ERCOFTAC and ECCOMAS, making the ECCOMAS network particularly relevant to our community. Through ERCOFTAC membership, researchers gain access at a discounted fee to the full range of ECCOMAS initiatives.

The main ECCOMAS event is the biannual congress, which includes invited plenary lectures, focused mini-symposia, and contributed presentations from academia and industry. A distinctive element of the congress is the Special Technology Sessions organized by the ECCOMAS Industry Interest Group. These sessions focus on advanced computational tools and methods for sustainable aviation, ground transportation, and related industrial sectors. In 2026, the 10th ECCOMAS Congress will be held jointly with the 7th World Congress on Computational Mechanics (WCCM) in Munich, from 19 to 24 July. In odd-numbered years, ECCOMAS also organizes a series of specialized thematic conferences that complement the main congress.

ECCOMAS offers particularly valuable opportunities for early-career researchers under 40 through EYIC, the ECCOMAS Young Investigator Committee. EYIC promotes collaboration, networking, and career development for young scientists. The second edition of the EYIC Grant has recently opened, aiming to support early-stage researchers in initiating or consolidating independent research activities. During the ECCOMAS Congress, EYIC also coordinates dedicated events such as career-oriented sessions, mentoring sessions, networking activities, and informal meet-ups.

ERCOFTAC members also benefit from eligibility for several ECCOMAS distinctions and recognitions. The association will nominate candidates for the ECCOMAS PhD Olympiads as well as for ECCOMAS Medals and Awards addressed to outstanding researchers.

Overall, the connection between ERCOFTAC and ECCOMAS strengthens our community by expanding scientific exchange, fostering career development, and promoting excellence in computational methods, with CFD at its core.
