    Title:
    Multiscale Interactions and Transport in Environmental Processes (MITEP)

    Abstract:
    Environmental fluid mechanics (EFM) is a multidisciplinary field, facingmultiscale problems of societal relevance. Nowadays, EFM is scattered over anumber of disjointed scientific communities, hampering dissemination ofknowledge and the extraction of technological innovations from scientificbreakthroughs.

    We develop a ‘first principles’ approach, integrating experimental andtheoretical multiscale methods to solve environmental problems involvingtransport and interaction processes in their natural context. This requiresbringing together different scientific disciplines (hydrodynamics, meteorology,biology, sedimentology, ecology…) to exploit new fundamental ideas forapplication to real problems. New state-of-the-art methodologies will bedeveloped for innovative solution of real-life processes. Emphasis is given toturbulent transport in air and in water, and to their interactions, expressedby selecting as main directions marine and lake dynamics and urban air quality.
